What is Chiropractic?

Chiropractic is a form of health care, which is concerned with the joints, bones and muscles of the body and their effect on the nervous system. It is primarily focused on the spine but  we treat the whole body and may just as well focus on the feet or the cranium.

Chiropractic care is a manual therapy where we use gentle and specific techniques to align the joints and therefore restore nerve and muscle function and balance. This may help to to relieve pain and reduce muscle spasm as well as helping restricted joints to move better.

Chiropractic can be helpful throughout life and the treatment is tailored to each person’s situation and clinical history, and we see patients ranging from newborn up to those in their nineties and vary our approach accordingly.

Why do we get spinal or joint mal alignment?

Human bodies are built to cope with a lot of stresses of many kinds such as physical, chemical and emotional. However, there comes a point when we have reached a breaking point and the balance is tipped over.

This is when we may acquire spinal restriction or mal alignment, which in turn can affect the nervous system and it’s function.

It is helpful to remember that the nervous system controls the tension of the muscles of the body and can therefore create muscle spasm or muscle weakness. In Chiropractic we emphasise the need for muscle rehabilitation. This is the re-education of muscles and joints to start working effectively again after injury or a period of misuse. It does not take long for our bodies to adopt bad habits and incorrect muscle function but it takes quite a while to re programme, or correct these bad habits.
